So, against all odds and logic, I’ve been named the guest editor of the next edition of the Best American Sports Writing.

Like most people who have been around, I’ve won writing awards here and there. This, however, is something entirely different. I grew up religiously reading the Best American Sports Writing series. It was, along with Zander Hollander’s annuals, my yearly bible; a chance to study, probe, understand the nation’s top scribes doing something I couldn’t at an extremely high level. I would anxiously await the announcement of the new editor—would it be David Halberstam or Rick Reilly? David Maraniss or Richard Ben Cramer? Frank Deford or Dan Jenkins? I mean, you’re talking about a murder’s row of legend . One tremendous scribe after another.

Now, I am 100 percent aware I’m not of that caliber. But, when the offer came, I actually squealed. Literally, I turned to the wife and let out an embarrassing little eek. Why? Because, even if I’m no Deford, I’ve busted my ass in this game for a long time. So stuff like this, well, it means a great deal.

"We sometimes project our problems onto sports," Louisa Thomas notes. "But sports can also be ... where we start to work them out."

"Sports has never quite known how to stay in its lane," notes Howard Bryant, ESPN senior writer and editor of the Best American Sports Writing 2017 ( BASW 2017 ) anthology. In a watershed moment for journalism, the best sports stories give shape to competitions in context, connecting prep sports and human trafficking, or taking a knee and the Bill of Rights, and lead the vehicle of sports to drift from its lane. Never before, though, have athletes and sportswriters found in the oncoming traffic the motorcade of the President of the United States, straddling the double-yellow line, hell-bent on a high-speed, high-stakes game of chicken.

This game of chicken is largely discursive, of course, but it has real effects. (Colin Kaepernick is currently without a paycheck. The Houston Texans, some claim, are currently without a quarterback.) Bryant and his fellow sportswriters remain committed to the notion that words have meanings and, in turn, consequences. As Bryant notes in his introduction, sportswriters strive for clarity as they articulate the connections between coaches and players and fans. It's why they write. It's why we read. Still, as Bryant notes, those connections appear fragile in this historical moment.

The Best Sports Writing is a yearly anthology of magazine articles on the subject of sports published in the United States. It was started in 1991 as part of The Best American Series published by Houghton Mifflin . Articles are chosen using the same procedure with other titles in the Best American Series ; the series editor chooses about 70-100 article candidates, from which the guest editor picks 25 or so for publication; many, but not all of the remaining runner-up articles listed in the appendix. The series has been edited since its inception by Glenn Stout .

The series culminated in 2000's Best American Sports Writing of the Century , which featured few works from the 1990s. The guest editor for that book was David Halberstam , who also was the guest editor for the first edition of the series, in 1991.

Selected from the cream of the sports journalism crop, nearly every guest editor has had at least one story published in a previous or later edition of the book. The only exceptions are John Feinstein , and Dick Schaap (whose work appeared twice in the Best American Sports Writing of the Century anthology). [1] [2]
